Important Terms Of Web Hosting

Web hosting is the space where files & contents of a site are kept to make it accessible on the internet. There are some important terms related to web hosting, which you should know clearly before buying any web hosting. These are briefly described below.

1. Server PC: The PC where websites are kept is called server PC. Server PC’s are usually high-performance PC connected to high speed & reliable internet & are kept running all the time to keep hosted sites up.

2. Disk Space: Disk space is the space on the server PC which is allocated for an account to store web files. Any file you want to publish on the internet should be kept on this space. The required space for a website is same as the total volume of the files, databases, emails etc.

Suppose, You want to host a website which has 200 files, which are 270MB, in volume. The site has a database of 10MB & You want to store up to 30MB’s of email then the required space is 270+10+30 = 310MB.

A lot of hosting providers claim to provide unlimited disk space, but practically no one provides unlimited space. If you use too much space on the server, they’ll close your account for lame excuses.

3. Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the measurement of data transfer between the web server and visitors’ PC or other data source. When a visitor visits a web page, the browser actually downloads the whole webpage including rich media files like image, video, audio, flash animation etc & show it on PC screen. The measurement of this data transfer is called bandwidth.

Bandwidth includes all type of data transfer like website visit, upload/download files, server to server data transfer etc.

The calculation of required bandwidth is quite simple. Suppose, the average size of your web pages are 520KB & you are expecting 100 daily visits on your site.

You have a product manual on the site for downloading which is of 3MB & the estimated download is 10 times per month.

You have a comment section on your company blog where visitors can upload avatar of max. 512KB while commenting on blog posts. You are expecting 50 people will upload avatars per month.

So, the monthly required bandwidth is -

For web pages: (520*100*30)KB = 1,560,000KB = 1523.4MB

For product manual: (3*10)MB = 30MB

For users’ avatar: (512*50)KB = 25,600KB = 25MB

Total: (1524+30+25)MB = 1579MB = 1.54GB

If you perform any server to server file transfer, then that’ll also be counted on bandwidth.

Like disk space, no one provides unlimited bandwidth though a lot of providers claim it. If your site consumes a lot of bandwidths, then they’ll close your account.

4. Uptime: The time when the server remains accessible on the internet is called server uptime. To keep a site accessible, it is required to keep the server run & connected to the internet.

Keeping server PC up all time is quite impossible as it requires regular hardware & network maintenance as well as server updates. Also, accidental technical problem may occur anytime. This is why most providers guarantee 99.99% uptime. So the maximum downtime is 0.01%, which means the maximum downtime per month is:

(30*24*60*0.01)/100 = 43.2 Minutes

This is what providers claim, but the reality is different. Good providers usually provide 99.90-99.99% uptime but for bad providers, sometimes it’s below 90%.

5. Addon domain: Addon domain is the domain which is added to a hosting account to publish different website under that domain.

While purchasing a hosting, everyone needs to register a new domain or use existing domain to sign up. This domain becomes primary domain or main domain for the hosting. All other domains added to the account to publish different websites are addon domains.

Consider, you used the domain example.com for purchasing a hosting. Then example.com is the main or primary domain for that hosting account. Then you wanted to host a blog on that hosting account whose domain will be example-blog.com. In that case, you’ll have to add the domain as addon domain on that account. After that, you’ll be able to host the blog under example-blog.com without affecting the main site hosted under main domain.

With addon domain, you can host more than one websites on the same web hosting account.

6. Subdomain: Subdomain is the extension of a domain which is mainly used to organize the site properly. Subdomain works as a directory on the server.

Suppose, you have a business site whose domain is http://www.mybusiness.com You have 3 sections on your site. Main section – containing your company & service information, Clients section & support section. Then you can host the main section on root domain & clients & support sections under clients & support subdomains respectively. So the address for clients section will be clients.mybusiness.com & support section will be support.mybusiness.com.

As an example, the URL of google plus is plus.google.com

Here, plus is the subdomain of google.com

If we split the URL based on domain level, then

.com = 1st or top level domain

Google = 2nd level domain

Plus = 3rd level domain

So, have a clear idea on these terms & choose the best hosting for your site.

Four Main Types of Web Hosting

One of the main problems people face while preparing for a website is the task of choosing the right web host and web hosting package which will suit their particular needs. Firstly it’s important you understand what web hosting is, what different types there are and which type will be best for you. Below is an outline of the four main web hosting types to help you make the right choices without being oversold a web hosting package and any features you may never need.

After you have created your website you now want it to be seen by visitors on the World Wide Web, to do this you need your website files to be uploaded on to a server. A server is basically a computer which is connected to the internet 24/7/365. You can either buy or rent different amounts of web space to store your website files on it. Hosting packages are typically different by the amount of web space allocated, the speed, amount of databases, amount of websites you can host, amount of email accounts.

Now you have a better understanding of what web hosting is, it’s now important to know the difference between the four main types of web hosting available to you.

Free Hosting

A quite popular kind of web hosting especially with students and small personal sites is free web hosting, which means you don’t have to pay for it! but as we all know nothing comes completely free. Web hosting companies which offer free web hosting will generally require you to put some kind of advert on your website or link, this is a revenue stream for them which can actually make them a tidy profit. Having free hosting will limit the professionalism of your website and you also run the risk of a person browsing your site to leave by clicking on the advert. Other downsides of free hosting is that your site will probably be hosted on an older server, so you will undoubtably have more downtime issues. As always with free hosting you will have limited web space and bandwidth and will not get any technical support. Free hosting is a good option for small personal sites, students but if you are looking to build a professional and efficient web presence stay well clear.

Shared Web Hosting

Shared hosting is a paid hosting service where multiple sites are hosted on one server which is connected the internet. Each website has it’s own web space on the server to keep it separate from the other sites. Shared hosting is by far the most popular kind of hosting available and is most relevant to the majority of people who require web hosting. Shared hosting is the perfect choice for small to large business sites, personal sites, blogs and gallery sites.

Shared hosting is also the most economical way to host your website and is far better than free hosting. Shared hosting lets you have your own unique domain name attached to it and gives you access to many other services. You can expect features such as sending and receiving email, software installation such as WordPress, Joomla, Drupal etc, databases, e-commerce features and fast, efficient technical support.

Virtual Private / Dedicated Servers

The have been many advancements over the last few years in both hardware and software technologies, especially in virtualization and have produced a very reliable type of web hosting known as virtual private / dedicated servers otherwise known as VPS or VDS. This kind of hosting refers to one physical server being partitioned off into separate, multiple virtual servers. Each of the virtual servers has the same appearance and features as having a dedicated server, it can run on it’s own operating system and also be independently rebooted. Virtual private / dedicated servers are a great choice for people who require more advanced features, without the cost of a full dedicated server.

Dedicated servers

Dedicated servers offer a completely dedicated solution solely for your website. You will have all the servers resources, processing power, web space, memory at your websites disposal. This is the recommended hosting option if you are expecting or experiencing high levels of traffic, need a higher level of reliability, more speed, enhanced security or require a specific software for your site. Dedicated servers are by far the best hosting solution available but are significantly more expensive.

What Unlimited Hosting Really Means

Competition in the web hosting industry is a rat race and companies are constantly coming out with new plans and offers to be the best provider. Various methods of marketing technique have been used by companies to not only get new customers but also keeping their existing users. One of the common offers that we always come into is the Unlimited Hosting offers. This method is a marketing strategy used by most web providers to lure customers. What is the good in offering unlimited hosting and how can a user benefit from?

For starters, we must understand that this marketing technique is just one of the many ways used by providers to get people’s attention. It may sound bad because it looks like a trap. Therefore, when you come across a company like this, the first thing you must do is to analyze. To two main keys for unlimited hosting is the bandwidth and storage space. These are the things that matters most for the web hosting when they offer their service to their customers.
There are many factors that may affect the loading of a website. That website may have a lot of graphics and the high volume of visitors may create a jam which will decrease the sped of the website.

This is where the bandwidth of the website plays it part. Many web hosting company are not rich in their infrastructure and the service that they can offer is definitely limited. Therefore, unlimited hosting is something that most web hosting company uses for new website users. Often, these users are owners of small business or they are using the website for personal use. Therefore, the web host will have control over the space and bandwidth assigned to each user.

There is always a possibility where a user might exceed their usage. This is where web host companies will recommend upgrades for that particular user. Upgrades mean additional cost that pays for your additional bandwidth and storage space. Serious webmasters will not mind paying more for the expansion of their business. They will consider this as an investment for the growth of their business.

So, unlimited hosting is really recommended because you are making a good investment for the long run. Nevertheless, using an unlimited hosting is useless if you do not have the features needs to produce a good website. Therefore, always consider the package in a whole to see if the provider includes the technology, system, support and reliability which are all important for your website to be excellent. The conclusion is, even though you come across an unlimited hosting package that is desirable, you still have to look through the provider so that you do not pay for something that makes you regret later on.

Web Hosting?

Choosing the right Web Hosting package for you can be a bewildering task. With so many packages, prices, terms, conditions, companies and countries vying for your business, it’s important that you understand what you need, so you can choose a company who can give you what you want.

So here’s a list of the major types of Web Hosting available on the market – what they are, and what they’re suitable for. And to make it a bit easier, we’ll follow the career of Dave*, a budding web entrepreneur making his first forays into the world of Web Hosting.

Free Hosting

Free Hosting is exactly that, and although the old adage ‘you get what you pay for’ doesn’t exactly apply – as you are getting something, after all – Free Hosting is not recommended for anyone with any kind of serious aspirations for their site. Of course we offer Web Hosting so we would say that, right? Well, the two main things to consider when looking at Free Hosting are 1 – someone has to pay for it, and 2 – what happens if something goes wrong.

With regards to the first point, it’s often the case that your Web Hosting is paid for by advertisements on your site, and as that is what makes the Web Host their money, they could well be as interested in advertising on your site as they are in getting you to use their service so they can have more adverts. This leads on to point two – what kind of support do you think you will get from a company that is giving you something for free? What kind of guarantees can you have that your Web Hosting is reliable or secure?

It is also common for Internet Service Providers (ISP’s), amongst others, to offer Free Hosting as part of a package with other services (such as Broadband or Digital TV). These are better solutions as they obviously come attached to a reputable (well…) company, and will be able to provide support. Again, though, remember that it is their other service that pay for your Hosting – the Hosting is an enticing extra. Support may well suffer, too, if the company specialises in other products and services.

Some companies, for instance Blogger, will offer free online spaces for specific sites (in Blogger’s case, you get a free online blog). However, you’re limited to what you can do with the templates they give you, and you won’t be able to expand your site or even have your own domain name. So, only go for Free Hosting if you are completely satisfied that the company will be able to provide you with what you want. We wouldn’t advise choosing Free Hosting for a business-related site in any circumstance!

In Dave’s instance, he has been given some Free Hosting as part of a deal with his ISP. Dave’s never made a website of his own before, and he’s certainly never had any Web Hosting. He’s interested but a bit lost, and manages to build a basic, personal site with only a few difficulties. He stumbles across WordPress and finds that he doesn’t get any databases with his Free Hosting. As the Hosting is part of his package – and free – his ISP don’t have any facility to upgrade his account. Dave decides he wants his blog on the Internet, and after talking to one of his friends on Blogger and thinking dreamily about maybe starting an online business, Dave contacts some Web Hosting companies to see what is available to him.

Shared Hosting

This is the most common form of Web Hosting available. A company sets up one or more servers to be used for Web Hosting, and their customers in turn pay for a portion of that server and share it with other customers. So a server may be responsible for several hundred web sites at a time.

Shared Hosting has many advantages. It is the cheapest form of commercial Hosting, as the cost of the server can be offset by the many customers who can use it at once. They don’t require advanced technical knowledge to use and you only need to administer your account – at no point do you have anything to do with the server. As it is a paid solution you will have access to customer support, a contract, uptime guarantees and so on.

The disadvantage is that, as you are sharing a server with other customers, you are also sharing the resources of that server. The server, just like a home PC, has only so much memory, CPU and disk space available, and if other customers are using it heavily – or if the Web Host has put too many people on the server – or even if the server isn’t particularly fast in the first place! – you may well find that your web site appears to be slow.

You will also find that Shared Hosting doesn’t allow a lot of the advanced, powerful features that higher end options present to you. There is a slight increase in security risk, too, as you can never be sure how secure your ‘neighbours’ are – but bear in mind that the server will be very secure in the first place, and the risk is not something to be alarmed about.

So our friend Dave starts out with a very simple Web Hosting package, with a little web space and a database. He installs WordPress and starts to blog seriously, and then decides he wants to start his online business. With his basic account he commissions a Web Design Company to build him an eCommerce site, with his blog built in as one of the features. As his store grows, he finds that he can expand his site fairly easily, without having to worry about any limits like he had with the ISP.

Shared Hosting is the ideal solution for most sites and users. With a few exceptions, only people who want their own server and/or control over the contents of it will need anything else. So Dave, like many people, is perfectly happy, until he decides to quit his day job, and go full time with his eCommerce site. At this point, Dave, who is a bit more knowledgeable about Web Hosting now, considers if there is anything he can do to improve his site.

Reseller Hosting

Reseller Hosting is a generic term that applies to several different kinds of Web Hosting. It isn’t a definition of the kind of Web Hosting on offer, as such, as the kind of person offering it.

A Hosting Reseller purchases a larger Web Hosting account from a Web Hosting company, and in turn sells portions of their account to their own customers. They are essentially providing the services of a Web Hosting company, without having to set up and finance the expensive hardware and the maintenance of it themselves. This kind of Web Hosting is popular with, for example, start-up Web Hosting businesses, companies with a large portfolio of sites, and Web Design companies wanting to offer Hosting to their clients.

A Hosting Reseller may be offering Shared, VPS or Dedicated solutions (see part two). Customers tend to benefit from cheaper Web Hosting as a Reseller often purchases their Web Hosting at a discount. The only major drawback with Reseller Hosting is that the Reseller is also a customer of the company they have bought their Hosting off of in the first place. The more advanced the Hosting they are offering, the more support the Reseller can give you directly – but as a customer of a Reseller, it is possible that you will contact the Reseller about a technical fault, who will then in turn have to contact his or her Hosting company.

Reseller Hosting is only of use to Dave if he decides to sell Hosting to other people, or expand his business with a large portfolio of other sites. If he wasn’t looking to do either of these he’d probably stick with Shared Hosting – as it is the most common form of Hosting it is also the most popular, and he’d get more use out of it. For now though, Dave thinks he is happy with a single site, he would just prefer to have more control and performance as his site is getting quite busy and he has a few demanding redesign plans in mind. So, in the second part of this article, we’ll look at some of the more advanced Web Hosting options available to Dave (and you, of course).

*Dave is not real. He is just for illustrative purposes only, and any resemblance to any Dave or any events that have happened to any Dave, living, dead or otherwise, is purely coincidental.

Cheap Hosting Web – Seven Pointers to Seriously Consider Before Purchasing

As well as explaining what is meant by cheap hosting web, I would also like to cover some other areas that I feel you have probably asked yourself, at sometime in the past.

So lets ask ourselves…

1) What is cheap hosting web?

2) Is hosting free or isn’t it?

3) Are there financial issues involved?

4) Where is hosting purchased?

5) What is hosting?

6) How does the information from your computer get up onto the Internet?

7) What are name servers and how do I change them?

What is cheap hosting web and is hosting free or isn’t it?

From my own personal experience of purchasing many domain names, if you are like myself, you will find that you are forever bombarded each time with up sales, throughout all of the pages leading up to the final check out. These in turn are offering, what is led to believe, free hosting.

Now as we are all well aware, there is no such thing as free hosting, as you will still pay for it one way or another.

If however I told you that buying a cheap domain from a registrar and cheap web hosting from a hosting company, ended up saving you a small fortune, then this is indeed what I refer to as cheap hosting web, i.e. you will save money if you buy both separately.

Once you understand what hosting is and where you can purchase it from, you will soon realize, how much money you are throwing down the drain.

Are there financial issues involved and where is hosting purchased?

So how much will hosting cost? Well if you buy a domain name with so called free hosting (yer right), this will set you back approximately $8 a month which will end up at $96 a year.

But if you buy them separately, you can shop around on the net and buy a domain name for as low as $7 a year and hosting from $4 a month which will end up $31 a year, that is a saving of OVER $60 a year. Now do you see why I call it cheap hosting web?

NOW I must emphasize that there are thousands of domain registrars and hosting companies on the Internet to choose from, that also have various up sales like webspace unlimited, subdomain hosting and they even try to persuade you to part with your hard earned cash by also giving away make believe 100mb hosting.

If any of these up sales that I have mentioned leave you in the dark, trust me, it is better off at this early stage, that you pay no attention to them. I only mentioned them for example purposes only.

But all these extra bits and pieces are to make you believe, that you are really getting so much value for your money, but as you will find out, it is the unknowledgeable victims that are robbed blind, because they don’t know where to find the answers.

You see, the webspace unlimited and the subdomain hosting that I mentioned, as well as the 100mb hosting, are usually things that people don’t even understand, let alone even get to use, and these combined domain and hosting companies try to get you to believe that you need them and they are making a killing at your expense.

These figures that I have used are a rough guide and you will need to satisfy yourself that you have indeed found the best deal for you that suits your budget.

But the chances are that if you just spend a couple of hours having a good look around, you will be able to save even more than what I have mentioned.

Just go to Google and type in “where can I buy hosting” and you will see that there is, as I type this article, 115,000,000 results, yep you read that correctly, absolutely staggering isn’t it.

Surely it has got to be worth a couple of hours surfing the net, if it means saving yourself $60 or even $80 a year and that is on just one topic.

What is hosting and how does the information from your computer get up onto the Internet?

Let me also just bring you up to speed with what hosting actually is and start by stating the obvious.

Everyone that connects with the Internet knows, that they type an email, possibly add an attachment and then hit send. But not everyone is aware, that between your computer and the World Wide Web, is this host that we are discussing and without it, your email would go absolutely nowhere.

So in a nutshell, your host is responsible for connecting what you do on your computer at home with the World Wide Web. Every website has and every website needs a hosting account as you are now beginning to realize and they have what your computer doesn’t and that is massive huge servers that are responsible for this service that you DO PAY FOR!

So why doesn’t everybody buy them separate and save loads of money? The simple answer is that not everybody will have the patience to copy this very simple blue print that you now have at your fingertips. Also some people will find what I am about to explain, very frightening.

I was also one of those people that shoved it aside as it seemed to difficult to understand, but found that once it was explained to me in simple language, one step at a time and without having to know anything about name servers, then I found it was extremely easy and it just all fell into place, also I found that once I had done it the 1st time, the 2nd time I actually smiled.

So no, hosting is not free, but it can save you considerable excess expense if time is taken to carry out the actions in the following section.

What are name servers and how do I change them?

Let’s assume that you have now bought your domain name from a registrar and hosting from a separate company.

If you bear in mind that the two companies are not connected and don’t talk to each other, all you need to do is put the address of the hosting company in between them so that your domain registrar knows where to send your email and attachment to, that we spoke about earlier.

The address in question is referred to in their language, as name servers and this simple maneuver is carried out by going to your domain registrar web site.

If you look around on the main page, you will see domain manager or manage domains or maybe even edit domains, or some thing like that.

If you still struggle to find it, just type domain manager into the search bar and hit enter. Once you find it, all your domains will be on view.

You click on the name that you want to change the name servers of and when faced with the next page, forget all about the scary jargon that you see, all you are interested in, is where it says name servers.

The email that you received from your hosting company will have name servers on it as well, of which there will be two of them.

You just copy and paste them into the name server boxes that we just referred to and click ok.

Now was that difficult and all I want you to do now is go over this one more time and it will become second nature.

I really congratulate you on doing this, because although it only takes a couple of minutes to do, as you have just witnessed, even if someone is shown this very simple task they won’t bother to do it, yet as I have already mentioned, you could be saving on average $60 to even $80 a year, so well done.

Reseller Hosting Services

Reseller web hosting refers to a kind of web hosting platform in which any registered user can host websites, of external parties, with the aid of personal drive capacity and the net bandwidth. The name reselling, therefore applies to the service. In more simple terms, the reseller host creates an account and buys host service and in turn, sells these, in return of a certain profit. A reseller can either rent a server from any host company or may resell the host services. The registration criterion is fulfilled through the opening of an account with a web host server or company. This technique is a good way to start a personal company. The prices and the plans that the resellers work with is decided solely by him or her.

Reseller hosting is easier than other web hosting platforms, in the sense that, it is less technical. The basic work of the reseller’s is to communicate and interact with the customers but all technical and infrastructural problems are tackled by the data center manager and the server provider. The crux of the reseller web hosting is the ability to advertise and market a site or a product online. Though the returns are a bit slow, gradually the reseller hosting service business earns the profits, since hosting is a pre requisite to survive in the cyber age today.

There are a number of advantages of reseller web services. The cost involved in this host set up is lesser than other shared hosting services. The best part is the high rate of inventory that a reseller web host gets. The reseller web service makes it more flexible than other shared hosting forums. There is ample time to concentrate on other work, rather than remaining glued to the same host service. This flexibility automatically leads to better management of more websites and in turn, leads to a solid client base.

Despite all the points that work in favor of the reseller web hosting, there are certain drawbacks to this platform as well. Once an active reseller account is opened, there remains very little time to concentrate on other work. Client dissatisfaction and complaints are not very rare, rather they keep pouring in. Though there are technical assistants, the marketing part of the reseller hosting services needs to be tackled by the account owner. This causes a lot of stress at times. In case, the reseller host is just starting out, there is a huge risk of losing money. In order to please customers, there are chances which lead to loss of personal money. The account holders at times, get too bothered with customer problems. This causes loss of enthusiasm and leads to work dissatisfaction.

Therefore, before deciding on choosing the reseller web hosting service as a business option, it is suggested that one weighs all pros and cons. There is no set formula to help one choose the perfect reseller service. However, reputation on the web and the history of a certain company are the best ways to judge what is best. Proper research takes one a long way before setting up a serious enterprise with the reseller hosting services.

Managed Hosting Vs Dedicated Servers

It can be a daunting task for a small business to increase its control over its web server functions. Shared hosting can be a great deal; it’s relatively cheap and provides hosting benefits that are otherwise unaffordable to a small business. When it comes to flexibility in making decisions regarding the server, however, there is no greater flexibility than with the use of dedicated web hosting.

When considering hosting your website on a dedicated server, you’re faced with two questions. Should you lease a dedicated server through a dedicated hosting plan? Or, alternatively, should you hire additional management of the server through a managed hosting option? Managed and unmanaged dedicated server hosting come at different prices and different levels of required server management. A unmanaged dedicated web hosting plan can be upgraded to a managed one, and many web hosting companies offer the latter.

Dedicated Server Hosting

With the most basic dedicated web hosting, a business website owner gets full use and access to a single web server. Leasing the right dedicated web hosting server can be cost effective and bring a higher return on investment. The website owner gets a choice of resources, such as the amount of disk space and the processor speed and type. Need a faster server to answer website requests? A dual quad-core processor may be suitable for you. Do you have many videos and high-volume data files? A larger disk space may be required.

You also get to choose which operating system and the control panel software the server will use.
Dedicated servers have an H.V.A.C. (Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning) climate controlled, redundant power facility that keeps the server operating efficiently.

But beware that an unmanaged dedicated server hosting plan requires you to do all of the above, and also maintain the server, perform data backup and recovery, and remotely fix the server if it crashes.

Managed Dedicated Server

With a managed hosting plan, not only do you receive the full benefits of a dedicated server, the use of a professional high-tech data center, but you also receive the benefit of having the hosting company provide technicians and administrators to help operate your web server.
Other benefits include:

1) Software updates – A managed web hosting plan can get newly released software updates.

2) Monitoring – Administrators work all day to ensure that all servers are running correctly, and are quick to react to a server crash.

3) Database Administration – Professional administrators can assist with creating and maintaining your data lists.

4) Backups/Disaster Recovery – A managed web hosting plan will help with regularly scheduled data backup, and restoration of data in case of loss.

If you do not have the human resource available to help maintain your dedicated server, managed hosting may be the most suitable avenue for you to take.
