How to Choose the Best Web Hosting

The two things that are important for the success of any website is the content of the website as well as the hosting quality of the website. How many times have you turned back from a website just because it didn’t load fast enough? Or how many times have you tried to reach a website, but the screen kept displaying an error. All of these can cause many web hosting websites to lose their clients and their visitors needlessly. Hence, if you are an owner of a website, then you should know that the selection of your web hosting company is an important one.

The first thing that you need to ask about your webhosting company is that do they have a hundred percent up link facility. This means that they should be covered for electricity outages as well as for bandwidth outages. The second thing that you need to ask yourself would be whether your webhosting company is able to give you full support for variety of scripts. Especially after the advent of Web 2.0; it has become a common practice to use a lot of interactive things on websites such as a Joomla module, interactive blogging, social bookmarking as well as social networking components. Hence, your webhosting will need to support criteria such as PHP, Frontpage or ASP. Moreover, it should be compatible with variety of Java scripts, as many new codes and scripts are devised every day. Thus, your webhosting should not have any compatibility issues with these scripts, so that your website will not become unresponsive.

If your webhosting company supports all of the technical aspects above and if it has a hundred percent uptime guarantee; then you can be sure that your web hosting service is reliable. Of course, the trick is to make sure that you get all of this reliability along with an affordable web hosting solution. Once you have ascertained the above facts; then you can start comparing the hosting prices. Naturally, you will need to go for the cheapest possible price web hosting for the best possible technical service. Luckily for you, there is a lot of competition out there and you can get some really good deals if you try.

However, be aware of the fact that the cheapest price doesn’t mean low quality and consequently highest price doesn’t mean that you will get high quality web hosting. If possible, see whether you can have a trial run of their services, as you will be able to test their services before you commit yourself to web hosting. If you do your due diligence properly, getting a reliable web hosting and a cheap web hosting at the same time can become a reality.

Free Web Hosting Service Comes With A Price To Pay

Some have said that nothing in life that was free was ever worth paying for. This is more than just a sound byte or a witty saying. Many people will enter into free web hosting deals without realizing the underlying price that they have to pay as a result. That price can affect professionalism. It can limit one’s abilities to give their enterprise everything it deserves. And it can certainly turn off potential clients, customers, and visitors. While not everything that is “free” should be considered a waste of time, one must still realize that for something free to truly be effective, it must have some means to an end, and that end is to generate revenue or build notoriety. Free web hosting services often keep an individual website owner from doing that under the guise of being “risk free.” The reasons you should reconsider if you have affiliated yourself based solely on lack of cost are many:

Lacking Professionalism

When people visit a site that they hold to be an authority or perhaps even a place with whom they would like to do business, they get very uncomfortable with sites that are hosted for free. For one, free services do not often allow you to brand your business the way that it needs to be branded in order to be effective. Getting a standard “dot com” or “dot org” name does not happen because your handle is always tied to some representation of the company that is hosting you. You are essentially helping them to brand themselves on your hard work and talent, and that can cost you a whole lot more than you will ever save by not paying for web hosting.

Limiting Controls

While a free web hosting service may give you some powers and allow you to be operational in that you are viewable by the public, they limit the amount of bandwidth and storage that you can use, and that ultimately limits your goals as an online entrepreneur. You have to be ready to grow and then manage a steady influx of traffic, and hosting companies that offer their services for free can only take you so far.

Turning Off Clientele

If you are in business for yourself and you want your site to be a moneymaker, then the worst thing you can do is attach it to some huge web host, regardless of the fact that they are web hosting you for free. Clientele looks for authority. They require it if they are ever going to part with any of their hard earned dollars, and that simply isn’t the image you are projecting if you go with a free service.

Consider these factors, and take the right step when you start your website.

Important Terms Of Web Hosting

Web hosting is the space where files & contents of a site are kept to make it accessible on the internet. There are some important terms related to web hosting, which you should know clearly before buying any web hosting. These are briefly described below.

1. Server PC: The PC where websites are kept is called server PC. Server PC’s are usually high-performance PC connected to high speed & reliable internet & are kept running all the time to keep hosted sites up.

2. Disk Space: Disk space is the space on the server PC which is allocated for an account to store web files. Any file you want to publish on the internet should be kept on this space. The required space for a website is same as the total volume of the files, databases, emails etc.

Suppose, You want to host a website which has 200 files, which are 270MB, in volume. The site has a database of 10MB & You want to store up to 30MB’s of email then the required space is 270+10+30 = 310MB.

A lot of hosting providers claim to provide unlimited disk space, but practically no one provides unlimited space. If you use too much space on the server, they’ll close your account for lame excuses.

3. Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the measurement of data transfer between the web server and visitors’ PC or other data source. When a visitor visits a web page, the browser actually downloads the whole webpage including rich media files like image, video, audio, flash animation etc & show it on PC screen. The measurement of this data transfer is called bandwidth.

Bandwidth includes all type of data transfer like website visit, upload/download files, server to server data transfer etc.

The calculation of required bandwidth is quite simple. Suppose, the average size of your web pages are 520KB & you are expecting 100 daily visits on your site.

You have a product manual on the site for downloading which is of 3MB & the estimated download is 10 times per month.

You have a comment section on your company blog where visitors can upload avatar of max. 512KB while commenting on blog posts. You are expecting 50 people will upload avatars per month.

So, the monthly required bandwidth is -

For web pages: (520*100*30)KB = 1,560,000KB = 1523.4MB

For product manual: (3*10)MB = 30MB

For users’ avatar: (512*50)KB = 25,600KB = 25MB

Total: (1524+30+25)MB = 1579MB = 1.54GB

If you perform any server to server file transfer, then that’ll also be counted on bandwidth.

Like disk space, no one provides unlimited bandwidth though a lot of providers claim it. If your site consumes a lot of bandwidths, then they’ll close your account.

4. Uptime: The time when the server remains accessible on the internet is called server uptime. To keep a site accessible, it is required to keep the server run & connected to the internet.

Keeping server PC up all time is quite impossible as it requires regular hardware & network maintenance as well as server updates. Also, accidental technical problem may occur anytime. This is why most providers guarantee 99.99% uptime. So the maximum downtime is 0.01%, which means the maximum downtime per month is:

(30*24*60*0.01)/100 = 43.2 Minutes

This is what providers claim, but the reality is different. Good providers usually provide 99.90-99.99% uptime but for bad providers, sometimes it’s below 90%.

5. Addon domain: Addon domain is the domain which is added to a hosting account to publish different website under that domain.

While purchasing a hosting, everyone needs to register a new domain or use existing domain to sign up. This domain becomes primary domain or main domain for the hosting. All other domains added to the account to publish different websites are addon domains.

Consider, you used the domain example.com for purchasing a hosting. Then example.com is the main or primary domain for that hosting account. Then you wanted to host a blog on that hosting account whose domain will be example-blog.com. In that case, you’ll have to add the domain as addon domain on that account. After that, you’ll be able to host the blog under example-blog.com without affecting the main site hosted under main domain.

With addon domain, you can host more than one websites on the same web hosting account.

6. Subdomain: Subdomain is the extension of a domain which is mainly used to organize the site properly. Subdomain works as a directory on the server.

Suppose, you have a business site whose domain is http://www.mybusiness.com You have 3 sections on your site. Main section – containing your company & service information, Clients section & support section. Then you can host the main section on root domain & clients & support sections under clients & support subdomains respectively. So the address for clients section will be clients.mybusiness.com & support section will be support.mybusiness.com.

As an example, the URL of google plus is plus.google.com

Here, plus is the subdomain of google.com

If we split the URL based on domain level, then

.com = 1st or top level domain

Google = 2nd level domain

Plus = 3rd level domain

So, have a clear idea on these terms & choose the best hosting for your site.

Budget Dedicated Server Is Getting More Affordable And Here Is Why

Dedicated server hosting and the word “budget” used to be polar opposites from one another. Many larger businesses had to move to the dedicated type, and when they did so, there was a bittersweet mixture of joy that one’s business had grown to that level and despair that operating expenses would get out of control. Dedicated platforms were not dedicated servers always cost effective, but they could be essential if one wanted to keep viruses and other impurities from polluting their site and the lives of their users. But all that is in the process of changing for the better thanks to these key areas: more options, changes in business practices, and more efficient infrastructure.

More Options

It used to be that if you needed a business online to run with any success you had to go with a dedicated server. That meant paying for additional infrastructure and in many cases hiring an employee to handle everything for you. It could be very cost prohibitive to small and mid sized businesses. Then along came virtual private servers, and the efficiency of hosting platforms got much better as did the cost. Cloud computing then came along and really turned some heads. With all these options out there, it was only a matter of time before the dedicated option had to work smarter and more cost effectively. But more on that in a moment.

Changes in business practices

With the economic crises of recent years touching virtually everyone, some sites went under while others were forced to make cuts and think about using the web more intelligently. Many banked on the freedoms of Facebook and Twitter and saw a surge in growth and a slicing of expenses. As a result, businesses found new ways to succeed or they finally fell in on themselves. The landscape of the marketplace changed once again, and with it, so too did the efficiency of the dedicated server.

More efficient infrastructure

By offering managed dedicated servers, and the use of multiple dedicated servers across many geographic locations, budget hosting became affordable managed dedicated servers even for those in need of the more expensive option. As a result businesses started coming back to dedicated, but they did it in a wiser and more cost efficient manner. With the redundancy and speed of multiple servers working at once, it became possible to have the perks of dedicated servers without actually having to rely on one infrastructure foundation.

If your business is growing, you can now rest easy knowing that the move to dedicated server hosting is within your budgeted means. And you really should consider the move as soon as possible for how it protects you and improves the user experience for all of your audience every time they log on.

Is A Dedicated Server Suitable For You?

With the invention of Internet, businesses have found new ways to expand their products and services as the Internet has broken down many barriers that were previously present. Nowadays, almost anyone can sell their products or services from the comforts of their home to people all over the world. However, managing an online business site means managing various aspects of the business which includes web hosting.

Like any other sites, you will first need to determine your site’s requirements and purpose so that you can find the most suitable hosting plan for it. There are various types of hosting plans which includes dedicated hosting and shared hosting. Most business entities especially larger companies prefer dedicated servers as they provide better consistency and better features compared to a shared server.

So what exactly is a dedicated server? It basically means that you would be having the whole server to yourself. You will not need to share the resources provider by the service provider with other websites. You will have better security as well as you would be the only one with access to it without having to worry about other companies hindering your security measures. That is why most companies prefer to pay slightly more for dedicated servers so that they may enjoy such benefits.

As your site will be the only one hosted on the server, you will be having more resources than you would with a shared server. This means you will have more disk space and bandwidth which allows you to upload more contents and allow growth in the future. Also, you will be able to provide better response time to your site’s visitors. They will be able to browse your site without experiencing any lag in the response time.

Additionally, you will get better control over the tools used and the construction of the site. You will be able to choose which tools that you are most comfortable or those that will give you the most flexibility. However, all these benefits do not come for free. You should be prepared to spend more money to enjoy such exclusivity and control. Also, there will be additional cost to hire technical support personnel to fix your technical problems when it arises. The cost of all these may be a drawback to some, however, you should consider it as an investment that you can make back when you see an increase in revenue due to a successful business site.

Do you know that a successful website depends on a quality hosting? Without a good host you will not succeed. Check out the best managed dedicated servers companies and learn which host is widely recognized by professional bloggers. Don’t forget to find out the best Joomla hosting too for its value of money!
